Color preferences and Moods

You heard of the mood rings, you paint your wall green at home because you heard that that the color of calmness. How we know all that – is it innate instinct or our visual impulses are trained with the time. Gale (1933) found that infants are attracted to bright colors as red and yellow. As children grow up the preferences have changed to blue and green. Green according to Choungrourian (1960) is not so preferred at age of 5 to 10 years old but constantly increased preference is observed with the age of 13-15 to come to first preference for university age students. Bourgeois 91977) made a test with first grade boys on their color mood associations. He read a sad, angry and happy story and asked them to rank them with a certain color according to the mood the one generates in them. Brown was picked for the sad story, but red was picked either for the angry and happy one. Odbert (1942) found that brown corresponds with sadness for adults. All that brings us to the conclusion that the brown color mood association is formed at early ages and stays consistent to adulthood. The happy “red” mood though turns to “yellow” with the years. Some believe that color mood associations are innate, not learned, formed on some biological factors; others say that organisms can be conditioned to have certain physiological response to a certain stimulus when trained. Some color associations are base on the different cultures, some are consistent to all. For example – Choungourian (1968) made an experiment with American, Labanon, Iran and Kuwait students at same economic level, education status. It turned out that blue-red combination is with highest preference in the US students due to patriotic emotions (the USA flag colors), and with lowest in Kuwait students. The green color though is at same level of preference to all, because that the nature color all over the world no matter culture differences. Red is the color of fight, it is the color of Mars and it contributes to the human will. If someone is indolent let him wear red clothes.
The red make a person active. It means Live and if you have anemia put a red shawl. It influences the heart.
Orange is the human Me and it represents the person individuality. If you have a lack of self-dignity, try to wear or watch orange to gain some self-confidence.
Green is connected with senses and it is calming. It helps the growing process.
Blue is the color of faith and Truth. If you do not feel comfortable, put in front of you something blue, it blows in energy and peace. Blue is for the spiritual life.
Purple is the Spirit’s color. It means Strength and brings Strength.
