The Presidential Pardon of the National Thanksgiving Turkey was instituted by Abraham Lincoln, when his son Tad had a turkey pet. This tradition was revived in 1947 by Harry Truman. The word “pardon” was first used in 1987 by Ronald Reagan. Every year the president gives pardon to one bird and her alternate (if the first one is not capable of maintain her duties).

2006 – Flyer from Monett, Missouri

2005 – Marshmallow from Henning, Minnesota

2004 – Biscuits, Mathias, WV

2003 – Stars, Carthage, Missouri area

2002 – Katie

2001 – Liberty

President Clinton gave pardon to:

2000 – Jerry from barron, Wis.,

1999 – Harry from petting zoo in Fairfax, Virginia

1998 - from West Concord, Minnesota

1997 – Willis from Raeford, N.C.

1996 – Carl

Till 2004 all the National Thanksgiving Turkeys were sent to Kidwell Farm in Frying Pan Park in Nerndon, Virginia. The last three years they were sent to Disneyland, California.
